RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Three N.C. Department of Transportation employees are being recognized for saving a father and son from a house fire.

The three men were honored with a Governor’s Award for Excellence, the highest honor bestowed upon a state employee. The award was presented during the annual ceremony at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh on Tuesday.

NCDOT employees Ricky Bradley, Jason Ray and Chris Painter were patching asphalt on a street in Marion last June. Just as they were preparing to leave, they saw smoke coming from a nearby house pulled the two to safety.

The Governor’s Awards for Excellence Program is designed to acknowledge and express appreciation to employees for outstanding accomplishments beyond their normal duties that are a credit to the person and the state of North Carolina.
