Greg Cosell: Greg Hardy And McDermott Need To Be Talked About More
Executive producer of NFL Matchup and Senior Producer of NFL Films, Greg Cosell, joins the Mac Attack for his weekly Friday 8:05 film breakdown.
After joking with the guys about the Panthers in the Super Bowl and dislking radio.
On New England’s offense vs. the Panthers: It will be fascinating to see how Beliichick decides to play this game. There have been times, with Brady, if they feel they couldn’t run the ball, they wouldn’t even try. They would line up in spread formations and go to the quick timing, passing game to negate the pass rush. I’m going to be anxious to see if they take that approach. Keep in mind this is still a young receiving group, but with Danny Amendola that should give Brady a higher comfort level. Belichick may decide they can’t run, so we’re not going to waste plays. Belichick is impossible to figure out game to game, because he’s so matchup based with specific opponents, so I’m intrigued.
On the Panthers defense against the 49ers: They physically whipped the 49ers offensive line and that doesn’t happen very often. There’s other elements to this, Colin Kaepernick, right now is struggling mightily. What once was clear to him is now very muddied. The Panthers defensive front, with a great rotation, is playing at a very high level.
On Greg Hardy: He needs to be talked about a lot. He’s become a very good player, who is used in a variety of ways: Defensive End, Defensive Tackle, and we saw him line up at Outside Linebacker in a base 4-3 this week. I think he’s had a terrific season.
On Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott: Another guy’s who not being talked about near enough. He’s done an outstanding job. He’s been able to keep his corners from being exposed.
On Cam Newton: He’s still not quite shown the consistency you’d like to see. He’s had some very good moments and made some outstanding throws. The numbers suggest he’s done well. He’s been very good on third down. He’s got the third best quarterback rating on third down (P. Manning and Brees). I’m not suggesting he’s playing poor football, I’m just suggesting that in this game, you may have to score 27-30 points, and if you do he has to be more consistent than he’s been the past couple weeks.
Cosell discusses Panthers blitzing (Tom Brady), the Patriots weapons and defense, Cam Newton as a game manager, the Panthers defensive interior, Luke Kuechly as the best 4-3 middle linebacker, and the 49ers-Saints and Broncos-Chiefs matchups
