WILMINGTON , N.C. (AP) — Teachers and principals in New Hanover County schools are being told they cannot wear “Red for Ed” t-shirts as a protest against actions earlier this year by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The “Red for Ed” campaign began after state lawmakers made sweeping changes in education including eliminating teacher tenure, eliminating supplements for teachers with master’s degrees and allowing vouchers for students to attend private schools.

Teachers and administrators in New Hanover County are being told that wearing clothing with political messages violates longstanding school board policy.

Teacher Lucas McLawhorn said teachers are allowed to wear plain red t-shirts. But if it says “Red for Ed,” that’s considered a political statement.
