Mike Florio from PFT and NBC gave us his take on the Panthers after he said last week he wanted to see them beat a good team like the 49ers. He claimed that “the rain was coming” for the Panthers. After our 10-9 victory in San Francisco, what does Mr. Florio have to say for himself?

“You know what, it could still rain.”

“There’s still seven games left. You know who you need to be worried about? The Arizona Cardinals. You know why? They hold the tiebreaker.”

But Florio mostly had good things to say about the Panthers, specifically the defense. “The thing is they’re not flashy, there’s not a lot of exotic stuff going on. It’s just guys kicking your butt at the line of scrimmage. It’s just basic meat-and-potatoes, I-will-kick-your-butt type defense. And you see, that’s sustainable. Because when you’re doing a lot of different things you can get burned. You have a code that can get cracked. Somebody figures you out, you’re screwed. If you’re just lining up and you’re kicking the other guy’s butt, you can tell him ‘here’s what we’re doing, here’s our formation, good luck.’”

He also noted that the offense stepped up and answered one of his questions regarding the team’s future growth: Can they come back from being down a couple of scores? DeAngelo Williams’ 27-yard run to bring the game to 9-7 at the end of the first half was huge.

That was the key, that was where the Panthers won the game, was to score the touchdown down 9-0,” said Florio. “That shows the kind of grit and the kind of determination that will serve the Panthers well in these tough games coming up; both games against the Saints, especially at New Orleans.”

“To come back the way that they did, that drive means more to me than the outcome.”
