RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A new analysis estimates that nearly 700,000 North Carolina residents will be eligible for tax breaks that cut the cost of buying private health insurance on the new marketplaces run by the federal government.

The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation says in a report released Tuesday that North Carolina will be near the top of states with the most low- and middle-income people benefiting from the subsidies.

Residents who qualify for tax credits generally must have income between the federal poverty level and $94,200 annually for a family of four. They can’t be eligible for affordable coverage from an employer or from Medicaid or Medicare.

The health policy group says two million people in Texas and almost that many in California would be eligible for tax credits.
