Jake Delhomme: Cam Is So Good When He Plays Within Himself
Former Panthers QB Jake Delhomme did a tremendous job with the guys talking Panthers, the progress of Cam Newton, NFL player safety, and more from around the league
Do you think the Saints are clearly better than the Panthers?
“Honestly no, I watch pretty much every game in the NFL and let’s be honest, the Panthers let one slip away first week against Seattle at home and then against Arizona in Arizona. Well, if you watched the first two games of the Saints this year, Steven Jackson dropped a touchdown pass with fifteen seconds left … directly in his chest against the Saints, and that would’ve been a loss. The following week against Tampa, the same thing. They (Tampa) had a mismanagement with the clock at the end, Tampa did, and they missed a forty-something yard field goal to seal the win… Flip flop those two games and we’re talking about who’s leading the division.”
More of Jake’s thoughts on the Panthers season so far
“The biggest thing for the Panthers is they are starting to find their mix… Obviously, the defense is much, much improved, but also offensively… they’re feeding DeAngelo, something that should have been done the last couple of years. Let him run the football, the more carries he gets the better, and certainly the bowling ball (Mike Tolbert) … get him near the end zone and he smells it and he finds it… Cam, he’s playing so within himself. That’s when he’s so darned good, because he’s passing the ball well, but he’s running it when he has those opportunities… I think it’s fantastic. I think they’re starting to get some confidence and hopefully it continues this weekend. The feel I get out of Carolina is that they’re starting to sense it and feel it, but they’re not getting too high or talking too much about it.”
