Jail Officer Charged For Giving Inmates Alcohol, Cellphone
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — An officer at the Charleston County jail has been charged with giving contraband including a cellphone and alcohol to inmates.
Sheriff Al Cannon says 33-year-old Venetia D. White was arrested Wednesday and charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to a prisoner.
Cannon says authorities started investigating last week after a cellphone was found in a cell.
In one month’s time, Cannon says White gave inmates the phone, as well as lighters, electrical tape and mini-bottles of alcohol.
Cannon says White was hired in August 2011 and has been on unpaid leave since her arrest. She was scheduled in court Thursday, and it wasn’t known if she had an attorney.
