Just a few weeks ago, we were wondering if Cam Newton had regressed after his strong finish to last season. But, 3 wins in 4 games later, and I believe we can say he is playing even better than he did at the end of last year.
His 146 and 136 QB Rating in the last 2 games are the best back to back QB Ratings of the year in the NFL. In the 3 wins, he has accounted for 9 total TDs and only 1 interception. And, that ability to take care of the ball is a key to his success. In his 16 career wins, he has thrown only 5 picks. In his 22 losses, he has thrown 29 interceptions.
He is much more willing to make the checkdown throws that he avoided like the plague in the past. And, many national football minds have noticed. Both Charley Casserly and Boomer Esiason have mentioned the change in Cam and how he is not forcing the ball downfield anymore.
And, this is not just a 3 game thing. If you take a look at Cam’s last 16 games, his numbers would make for a good season. A 9-7 record, 60 percent completions, 3800 yards, 31 total TDs, only 11 interceptions and a QB Rating of 92.
And, this season is shaping up to be a big one too for Cam. His QB rating of 95 and his current completion percentage of 64 would be career highs. And, he is on the verge of being over .500 for the first time ever in the NFL.
He is way more efficient. He is making much better decisions and taking care of the ball. And, his stats and the Panthers’ record are starting to reflect that.
