NEW ELLENTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a construction worker has died after a piece of iron fell on his head at a plant in New Ellenton.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said 34-year-old Jorge Rodriguez of Mexico was removing steel beams at the AGY Plant on Monday when a 30-foot piece of iron fell and struck him in the head.

Carlton says the iron fell about 7 feet. Rodriguez died a short time later at the hospital.

The coroner says an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
