Ok, Am I grasping here? Maybe. But, as Panther fans, I believe we should look anywhere for a reason for hope. Like the NY Times. Chase Stuart wrote a piece for The Times citing history and probability as reasons why he thinks the Panthers might be ready to go on a tear.
Stuart writes that the Panthers plus 41 scoring margin is the highest a 2-3 team has had since 1921. And, he says when teams have losing records but have outscored opponents by a large margin, it is a sign of good things to come.
Stuart says there have been eleven 2-3 teams with a scoring margin of more than plus 20 since 1990. He says those eleven teams went on to win 65 percent of their games the rest of the way.
The theory is that they are a better team than their record indicates. Football Outsiders agrees with that theory. They rank the Cats 8th in their efficiency rankings. They still give the Panthers a 39 percent chance of making the playoffs. That is based on the belief that play in and play out, they are a much more efficient team than their record shows. And, their belief is that will correct itself moving forward.
Statistical garbage? Or a rational take? The 2013 Panthers will tell us the answer in the next couple months.
