COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old University of South Carolina student shot in Columbia’s bar and entertainment district was an innocent bystander.
Investigators said 20-year-old Michael Juan Smith was arrested shortly after the shooting around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Police say Smith and another man were arguing when Smith fired his gun. Police say Smith missed his target, but hit the woman who was in front of a pizza restaurant with a group of friends. She has not been identified, and remains in the hospital in critical condition.
The shooting happened in the Five Points area, which is near the University of South Carolina’s campus.
Smith is in jail without bond. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
