PENDLETON, S.C. (CBS Charlotte) — Authorities say a 72-year-old woman shot a man who broke into her home and was beating her friend with a baseball bat.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Frances Ward was acting in self-defense after 54-year-old Richard Keese broke into her Pendleton home and began assaulting her and her friend.
Authorities say Keese broke into the home of Ward and her friend Monday afternoon. Keese allegedly grabbed the baseball bat from Ward’s friend who was using it to defend herself and began beating her with it. That’s when Ward grabbed her handgun and fired at Keese, grazing his head.
“If he hadn’t been standing up, I would have hit him right here with the gun because I was aiming for his forehead to kill him, because he was beating the daylights out of her with that ball bat and I wasn’t going to let that happen,” Ward told WYFF-TV.
Ward said she knew Keese because she hired him to fix her car last month.
Ward’s friend was released from the hospital Monday night suffering from head, back and foot injuries, according to WYFF.
Keese was released from the hospital Tuesday.
Keese has been charged with attempted murder, burglary and trespassing and is currently being held in the Anderson County Detention Center.
