Chowan Schools Close Because Of Threatening Letter
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — Chowan County schools and the local community college are closed after the sheriff’s office received a letter threatening to blow up bridges, the courthouse, schools and other buildings.
Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin said his office received a letter containing the threats Monday morning. He says the hand-written, unsigned letter didn’t include a motive but did list the specific times for the attacks. He declined to disclose those times.
The writer threatened to blow up the two main bridges in the county, the Chowan River Bridge and the Albemarle Sound Bridge.
Nothing suspicious was discovered during searches Monday of the courthouse and schools and inspections of the bridges.
Officials say Chowan schools and the College of the Albemarle’s Edenton campus closed Tuesday.
