MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) — Family members say a Morehead City police officer shot by another officer while training is out of a medically induced coma.

Officer Garrett Hardin remained in critical condition at a Greenville hospital on Friday. The State Bureau of Investigation says the 22-year-old from Havelock was shot by another officer during training in the police department’s rear parking lot.

Garrett’s aunt says he was not wearing a bullet-proof vest and he was shot near the breastbone, with the bullet going into his right lung. Family members said doctors put Harden in a medically induced coma after surgery.

Morehead City Police Chief Wrenn Johnson says she won’t identify the other officers involved in the accident.
