DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Google is letting the tech-curious in North Carolina test Google Glass, a device designed to work like a smartphone and worn like a pair of glasses.

The product’s developers hold their first open public event on Saturday in Durham. Google says it’s reaching out to potential consumers in the Research Triangle Park region because of its reputation for innovation and entrepreneurship.

The gadget is a lightweight eyeglass frame equipped with a hidden camera and tiny display that responds to voice commands. Information is shown on a thumbnail-sized transparent screen attached just above the right eye to stay out of a user’s field of vision.

The Glass isn’t widely for sale. About 10,000 people are trying out an early version with most of them selected as part of a contest.
