BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) – Two children have died in an early morning house fire in Burke County. Fire officials say they were a 6-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother.

Four other people were said to have been injured in the blaze, including a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper who tried to save the victims.

Authorities told the Charlotte Observer that two related families were living in the home, located in the Connelly Springs area of southeastern Burke County.

When firefighters arrived around 3 a.m. Thursday they found the house already in flames. Crews battled for over a half hour to bring the fire under control.

Firefighter Shane Bowman said they were told people were trapped in the house, but they could not be rescued, according to the paper.

So far, there is no word on the cause of the fire.
