The Drive Wednesday 8-28-13 -Cam Newton talks with The Drive about about his offensive line and how they will gel after time, how much confidence he has in his wide receivers, and if he thinks that the Panthers are ready to be a playoff team.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton joins The Drive to talk about the upcoming season.  But we first ask him about the 1980′s style short shorts he was wearing at practice.

” I’m not trying to make a fashion statement or anything I’m just trying to be comfortable when we’re out the the other shorts tend to stick to you”

After that we get serious by asking Cam about his offensive line and if he feels like they can protect him this season.

“Absolutely, Absolutely I feel safe back there, at the end of the day I’m a football player I understand the risks…We all hold each accountable.”

Next we ask the third year QB if he feels comfortable enough now to “control the chaos” on the field.

“I feel like I’m getting better as a quarterback in this league.  I feel like I have an excellent supporting cast with Agent 89 (Steve Smith) Coach Shula, Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen.  We all push each other to be better.   Players pushing the coaches and coaches pushing the players.”

Everyone wants the Panthers to make it to the playoffs so we ask Cam what his expectations are for 2013.

“For us right now its to go out and when this preseason game and after that we have to go 1-0″

“We’re playing an unbelievable Seattle Seahawks team we know that.”

With Steve Smith coming in studio on Mondays this season on The Drive we ask Cam for some dirt on the wide receiver.

“Smitty is an interesting character who else would I want to be playing next to than Steve Smith.  No teammate has ever questioned what type of player he is.

The Panthers play Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Charlotte to close out the preseason.
