RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory is promoting a former FBI agent to head North Carolina’s public safety agency.

McCrory announced Wednesday that Frank Perry will become the new secretary of the state Department of Public Safety. Perry has been the agency’s interim leader for about three weeks since the sudden resignation of Raleigh attorney Kieran (KEER’-an) Shanahan.

Perry is a North Carolina native and Wake Forest University graduate who spent 22 years as an FBI special agent, including as head of the FBI’s Raleigh office. He then worked for the State Ethics Commission and later as former State Auditor Les Merritt’s top investigator.

Shanahan resigned last month after about seven months running the state agency that oversees the state prison system, the Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies.
