CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced a Charlotte man to 18 months in prison for rigging more than 530 vehicle emission inspections and taking bribes of up to $100 per car.

The Charlotte Observer reports ( Jassim Juburi also must pay a $15,000 fine. Juburi was a mechanic and licensed emissions inspector at a Charlotte garage. He was sentenced Thursday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Juburi pleaded guilty in March 2012 to one count of conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act by making fraudulent inspections.

Investigators say Juburi took bribes to give dirty cars clean bills of health by hooking up surrogate vehicles to his emissions-testing equipment. Prosecutors say undercover investigators received an emissions certificate from Juburi without ever dropping off a car.
