SC Man Walking On I-85 Killed By 18-Wheeler
GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 43-year-old Gaffney man has been killed after he was struck by two tractor-trailers while walking on Interstate 85 in Cherokee County.
Coroner Dennis Fowler says it took him most of the day to identify John Swofford because he was only wearing pants and shoes when he was struck around 1 a.m. Wednesday near mile marker 91.
The coroner says Swofford was walking along the shoulder of I-85 when he stepped into the path of an 18-wheeler heading north. That tractor trailer knocked him into the path of a second 18-wheeler. Fowler says the impact was so great that Swofford was knocked out of his shoes.
Fowler says Swofford left his home around midnight. The coroner is still trying to figure out why he was on the interstate.
