LINCOLNTON, N.C. (AP) — A former Lincoln County firefighter has been accused of taking more than $21,000 from two fire departments by submitting fake invoices.

Sheriff’s deputies say 36-year-old Lee Thomas Keever of Denver turned himself in Wednesday.

Keever is charged with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

He is accused of getting nearly $18,000 from the East Lincoln Fire Department. He also is accused of taking nearly $4,000 from the Denver Fire Department.

Investigators say they were contacted July 15 by fire department officials, who said a former firefighter had turned in fraudulent invoices for school tuition, classes and equipment supposedly purchased for the departments.

Fire officials said the suspect also had presented bills for services that were not completed.

It was not clear if Keever has an attorney.
