NC Weighs Abortion Ban For Some Insurance Policies
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina is poised to prohibit private insurance companies from covering customers who want abortions if their policies are purchased through a coming health insurance marketplace.
The 2010 federal health overhaul law requires that each state have online marketplaces where households and small businesses can shop for private insurance. Individuals can shop for their own coverage on these exchanges starting in October and could receive government subsidies based on their income.
North Carolina opted against setting up an exchange, so the federal government will run it instead. But the federal health law also allows states to prohibit abortion coverage in insurance policies offered on exchanges.
North Carolina lawmakers included the health exchange ban in legislation aiming to further restrict the procedure.
