IVA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man in handcuffs in the back of an Iva police car managed to let down the window, get in the front seat and drive off in the cruiser.

Investigators said 26-year-old Kenneth Tollison was free for about nine hours Wednesday until an Anderson police officer spotted him still in handcuffs and arrested him.

Iva Police say they first took Tollison into custody after a bank employee caught him trying to forge a check. He was handcuffed in the back of a cruiser, but Police Chief Thomas Miller says the patrol car hadn’t been equipped with a device to lock the windows, letting Tollison escape.

Police say Tollison also nearly hit an officer with the stolen cruiser.

It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
