Another NFL QB has gotten paid. This time it was Matthew Stafford,  getting a 3 year extension to bring his now five year deal to a value of $76 million.  He will get $43 million guaranteed over that time frame.   A year from now, I would expect Cam Newton to be signing a hefty new deal as well.

Matt Ryan reportedly is up next this offseason.  That will bring the number to 5 franchise QBs who got paid since the season ended.  Next year should be Cam’s time.

The new CBA says that after a player’s 3rd year teams can finally give a player  a long term deal. The Panthers should take advantage of this opportunity.  You are building your franchise around him and can’t afford to lose him.  And, he is the first big time QB who came after the new rookie wage scale was implemented.    He received $28 million less guaranteed money in his rookie deal than Sam Bradford did in his.  Cam is going to want to make up for that at first chance and I don’t blame him.

Offer him a $100 million deal for 6 years and give him $35 million guaranteed. That is more than fair market value.  Heck, Stafford got $43 mill guaranteed and he doesn’t run as well as Cam and hasn’t been as durable as Cam.

Teams pay their franchise QBs. That is how the NFL works.  Sure, our cap situation is dicey, but it is imperative we find a way to do it sooner rather than later.  Look at the Ravens. They waited until Joe Flacco’s contract year and they paid for it.  Let’s ‘pay the Cam’ the first chance we get.  And, that is next March.
