When the Bobcats picked Cody Zeller on Thursday night, tons of fans at the Cats’ own Draft Party booed. Many headed for the exits immediately in anger. I still don’t understand why this pick led to such an extreme reaction.
Do I love this pick? No. But, do I feel like this is Adam Morrison 2.0? Heck no. Zeller is a 7 footer with the ability to shoot NBA 3s, run the floor like a Gazelle and defend the pick and roll. There are much worse types of players we could acquire. Hell, we have acquired much worse, just google our draft history.
I do understand why Cats fans in general would be ticked. The team has had only one winning season in 9 years. And, that playoff run lasted all of 4 games. Plus, their draft history is a train wreck. So, if you want to give them collective boos, I have your back.
But, the Zeller pick itself is a safe, solid pick. Does it knock my socks off? No. But, I don’t fear the worst like I would with Noel or Len because of their injuries and how raw they are on offense. Sure, Zeller’s ceiling isn’t extremely high, but he should be a nice piece to rebuild with.
Next year is the best draft in years and we could have 3 lottery picks. Plus, we could have over $30 million in cap room. Stay patient my Bobcat friends. If we win 10 games and have the worst record in the league and don’t get Andrew Wiggins next year because of the stinkin’ draft lottery, I will join you in your anger. But, until then I am staying patient.
