FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A Fayetteville police officer has shot and wounded a man who officers say fired at them as they investigated a death.

Police Lt. Todd Joyce said 24-year-old Solomon Nimrod Butler was in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Joyce says the shooting happened Wednesday at a home where a man’s body had been found. The man’s name has not been released.

Police Chief Harold Medlock says an officer returned fire when Butler began shooting at a group of about 20 officers who were talking with family members. No one else was hurt. Police think Butler lived in the same house.

Medlock says the dead’s man body was found by two women who went to check on their brother. The chief says the house was in disarray.
