CHARLESTON, S.C. (CBS Charlotte) – A South Carolina man will spend the next three years behind bars after refusing to pay for a $70 restaurant bill.
The Journal Gazette & Times-Courier reports that 47-year-old Anthony Malabehar received a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty of a theft charge for stealing from the Alamo Steak House.
Mattoon authorities say Malabehar ran up the bill after ordering a meal, an appetizer and drinks in April, and then refused to pay. It was the second time in two months he refused to pay his bill at a restaurant.
According to the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier, he refused to pay for his bill at the Hunan Restaurant in February.
Malabehar received three years because of previous theft and property offense convictions.
Assistant State’s Attorney Rob Scales says Malabehar never gave an explanation why he refused to pay his bills.
Malabehar was also ordered to pay restitution to the restaurants and fined $100.
