(CBS Charlotte) — Millions of Verizon customers are being subjected to having their phone records turned over to the United States government — without their knowledge.
The Guardian first reported that The National Security Agency obtained permission to review millions of phone records continuously — since April 25, 2013. More specifically, your location information, length of calls, and the time of day you receive and make calls are being tracked until July 19.
According to the court order, which was granted to the FBI, your conversations are not being recorded, and no other information is being obtained. However, the order explicitly prevents Verizon from notifying their customers that their information is being monitored, or that the FBI is requesting your information.
NBC News reported this morning that the Obama administration stands behind the practice of obtaining phone records, and that they would neither verify or deny that Verizon is under a court-ordered obligation to supply the United States government with phone records.
If you are a Verizon customer, we’d love to hear from you. Do you feel that this is an invasion of your privacy? Feel free to leave a comment below.
