Woman Dies In Custody Of Columbia Police
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 49-year-old woman has died while in the custody of Columbia police.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said officers arrested the woman around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Columbia’s bar and entertainment district when she started screaming, running into traffic and jumping into cars.
Investigators say the woman screamed and collapsed as she was being moved from one police vehicle to another after kicking out the window of a patrol car. She died at the hospital.
Watts says an autopsy showed no sign of injuries. He is giving the preliminary cause of death as a drug overdose while he awaits toxicology reports.
The woman’s name hasn’t been released because her family hasn’t been notified.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death since it happened in police custody.
