2 Arrested After 10-Month-Old Ingests Opium
GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) — Police in Gastonia have arrested a man and woman who they say allowed a 10-month-old boy to ingest opium.
Authorities say 44-year-old Pamela Pope Cavender and 45-year-old Nick Randall Huffstetler are charged with child neglect/abuse, resulting in serious bodily injury. The two were to appear in court Tuesday.
According to police, officers were called to Huffstetler’s home on May 1 and found the child unresponsive and not breathing. The boy was rushed to a local hospital, and then to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. Police said the child was hospitalized for more than 20 days.
Cavender is the child’s grandmother and was babysitting for her daughter, who was out of town.
The two suspects were being held under $50,000 bond. It’s not known if either suspect has an attorney.
