Panthers QB Cam Newton says he is working hard to prove to the team he is worthy of being named captain for the first time in his NFL career. Considering the fact that 18 of the 23 teams that had season long captains last year had QBs as offensive captains, I am surprised this topic is so polarizing.
Sure, I knew that many fans would feel like Cam shouldn’t be captain. But, i knew those reasons would be silly things like “he puts a towel on his head” or “I never like him since his Auburn days.” But, some in the media agree that Cam isn’t ready to have that C on his jersey.
But, in my opinion, you can’t truly be a Quarterback that is a team leader until your teammates vote for you as a captain. I understand that Jordan Gross and Steve Smith are vets on the team. But, neither plays QB. That is the ultimate leadership position in sports. When a guy plays Point Guard in hoops, he is called the QB of the team. It is the most important position in sports. And, to play it at the optimum level, you need to be a leader to your teammates. For the first year and a half of Cam’s career, he was not a leader.
But, in the middle of last year, something clicked. He played his best ball on the field and seemed to mature as well. Players started calling him a leader for the first time in Carolina. And now, for the first time in his NFL career, Cam is captain ready.
I don’t care how it happens. Whether Gross or Smitty opt to give up a C. Or if they just name 3 offensive captains. One way of another Cam needs to be a Captain in 2013. The Titans thought enough of Jake Locker to name him a Captain in his 2nd year. And the Skins and Colts did the same for RG3 and Luck in their rookie seasons. So, I think it would be a nice vote of confidence to make Cam one in his third year.
