RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A divisive bill requiring North Carolina educators to teach children that abortion causes later premature births is headed to the House.

The bill passed the Senate Monday 38-10 with some Democratic support. The bill requires those in grades seven and higher to learn about the risk factors associated with premature birth.

The inclusion of a longer list of risk factors hasn’t appeased some Democrats and abortion-rights groups. They say calling abortion a “cause” of preterm birth isn’t supported by a scientific consensus of major health organizations.

Republicans counter that a 2012 state report supported a link between the two. They also read a document they said came from a Charlotte abortion clinic that requires patients to acknowledge the risk of future premature births before the procedure.
