NC Group Resisting GOP Changes To Public Schools
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina groups that want to protect the funding for traditional public schools are trying to raise opposition to legislative proposals to expand private-school vouchers and charter schools.
Public Schools First NC on Monday holds the fifth of its meetings across the state to talk about sustaining and increasing public schools funding.
The group says proposed state budget cuts would cause the loss of 3,000 teaching assistants in second- and third-grade classrooms.
The group also opposes plans by Republican legislative leaders to eliminate class sizes limits in lower elementary grades and to reduce eligibility for pre-kindergarten courses aimed at helping children at risk of lagging their peers.
