RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A bill requiring North Carolina’s health instructors to teach students that abortions cause premature births in later pregnancies is headed to the Senate floor.

The Senate Health Committee approved the bill Wednesday in a close voice vote that sparked objections from Democrats. The bill requires those in seventh grade and higher to learn about the risk factors of premature birth and specifically includes abortion as a cause.

Bill sponsors included expert testimony from the author of a state report that concluded induced abortions unquestionably put mothers at risk of future premature births.

Opposing medical experts said that conclusion overstated the risks and said the bill inaccurately connects a risk with a cause.

Democrats said decisions about curriculum should not come from politicians who lack expertise in the field.
