Unemployment Benefit Applications On The Rise In NC

Weekly U.S. unemployment benefit applications rose slightly last week to a seasonally adjusted 352,000, a level consistent with modest hiring.

Here are the states with the biggest changes in applications. The state data are for the week ended April 6, one week behind the national data:

States with the biggest increases:

New York: Up 20,120, due to layoffs in transportation, education and public administration

North Caolina: Up 4,403, due to layoffs in textiles, industrial machinery, transportation and warehousing

Ohio: Up 3,029, due to layoffs in manufacturing, communications and services

Michigan: Up 2,894, due to layoffs in manufacturing

Texas: Up 2,445, no reason given

States with the biggest decreases:

California: Down 12,893, due to fewer layoffs services and all other sectors

Kentucky: Down 1,318, no reason given

Pennsylvania: Down 1,299, no reason given

Indiana: Down 1,066, no reason given
