CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) — Firefighters from two Charlotte firehouses will compete tomorrow afternoon in the Walmart Steak-Over Challenge.
This year, the Walmart Steak-Over Challenge is being held in eight different cities, including the Queen City. Two firefighters from each city have been chosen to grill-it-out for a chance to win the grand prize — which is $20,000.
The winning finalist from each city will compete in the final competition — which will be held in Los Angeles, California.
Jeff Nixon has been a firefighter with the Charlotte Fire Department for 10 years now. He works at station 39 in South Charlotte. Nixon says his passion for cooking and firefighting began as a child. Growing up, he was influenced by his dad, who was a firefighter for the NYFD. He was also influenced by his step-dad who was a master chef.
Nixon began cooking at the age of 9, and has since participated in several cooking competitions. He even cooked for Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin, back when the show was called, “Live with Regis and Kelly.”
Because of his amazing cooking skills, Nixon admits that he’s often in charge of dinner when on shift at the station.
Nixon will be competing against Rob Porter, a firefighter from Station 7, located in NoDa.
Walmart shoppers and spectators will be able to watch, taste-test each steak, and cast their vote for which firefighter grills the best tasting steak.
The competition will be held at noon in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter, on East Independence Blvd. The winner will be announced at 2 p.m.
