CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte)  – Scattered storms are quickly spreading across the Charlotte region, and Mecklenburg County is currently under a tornado watch until 4 a.m.

Two waves are expected with this storm, and both have the potential to deliver severe weather to our region.

Strong gusts of wind and hail are possible with this storm, and in the event of a tornado it is recommended that residents seek shelter immediately. Tornadoes can form rapidly, and residents cannot always rely on the news to warn them of a tornado on the ground.

The safest place to seek shelter during a tornado is an interior part of your house or a basement. Additionally, avoid seeking shelter near a window, as broken glass and/or debris caused by a tornado can cause severe injuries.
