Charlotte, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) — The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is hosting the Charlotte 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes on Saturday April 27, 2013, at Carowinds Theme Park.

Thousands of walkers will join together to raise funds for the JDRF and to show their support for people who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. All participants who raise $225 or more will receive a JDRF Walk t-shirt, in addition to a free ticket to Carowinds, a Charlotte Knights game, and a Charlotte Checkers game! There will also be special appearances from the Lady Cats, Rufus, and Chubby.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. It can occur at any age, however, it is most often diagnosed in children, adolescents, or young adults. For those affected by diabetes, food and management can be a struggle. Learning how to combine regular blood glucose testing, exercise, healthy eating, and medications, can often seem overwhelming.

While there is no known cure for type 1 diabetes, the JDRF has three objectives: “To cure type 1 diabetes and remove the disease from the lives of loved ones; to develop better ways to treat type 1 diabetes, which will allow people to live better, healthier lives; and to prevent type 1 diabetes from occurring in those most susceptible.”

Registration for the 23rd annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, sponsored by Sunbelt Rentals, begins at 7:00 a.m. — and the walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be free parking available to all walkers. Walkers can enjoy a three mile stretch of Carowinds Theme Park while they support this great cause!  To date, the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes has raised $1 billion. By participating in this walk, you help the JDRF continue their work towards finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Tanner, from WSOC’s Tanner In The Morning, will be the MC for the event. Tanner also has a team who will be participating in the walk. If you would like to donate or sign up to walk with Tanner’s Troopers, please click here.
