CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in Charlotte say an 18-year-old woman faces manslaughter charges after the car she was driving slammed into a tree, killing a teen-age passenger and seriously injuring the driver’s 11-month-old son.

Police say Sydney Danice McDaniel was driving a 1991 Honda Accord Wednesday night when she apparently lost control of the car on a curve before hitting the tree.

Officials said 15-year-old Martha Estela Rosales was killed. McDaniel’s young son was injured, as was another 18-year-old woman in the car. They were taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

McDaniel is charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, driving after consuming alcohol while under 21, fictitious tag on vehicle, child neglect, and possession of marijuana. She’s being held in the Mecklenburg County jail. It’s not known if she has an attorney.
