Heart Attack Kills Man Fighting Fire At His Home
ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say an 83-year-old man has died from a heart attack trying to fight a fire at his Anderson home.
Authorities say firefighters found Billy Cheek unconscious outside his home when they arrived around 5:15 a.m. to put out the blaze.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office says it appears Cheek was trying to get a garden hose to fight the fire when he collapsed. Authorities say his wife also suffered chest pains, but is expected to survive.
Deputy Coroner Don McCown says he expects an autopsy Sunday to confirm that Cheek died from a heart attack brought on by the stress of being awakened by a smoke alarm and trying to fight the fire.
