NC Rallies Planned Against Saturday Mail Cutback
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The national labor union of United States Postal Service letter carriers is staging rallies in Raleigh, Charlotte, and around the country in favor of continuing Saturday mail delivery.
Rallies are planned Sunday for the State Capitol Building in Raleigh and the Carmel Road Post Office in Charlotte. The National Association of Letter Carriers says its protests are meant to mobilize public support for Saturday delivery service.
The financially troubled Postal Service announced last month that it would switch in August to five-day service for first-class mail and continue six-day package delivery. The Postal Service says it’s losing $25 million per day under its existing regulatory structure.
But the Government Accountability Office said the postal agency did not have the right to end Saturday mail on its own.
