The first official day of March Madness is in the books and there were a few surprises that became early bracket busters. Most of the expected teams dominated their games easily including Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse and VCU. Gonzaga, a number one seed in the West region, was pushed to their limit yesterday against Southern University.

Gonzaga was down at one point in the game, but managed to make a late comeback and hold on to a 68-54 victory. Since Gonzaga was the number one seed before the tournament began, many did not expect them to struggle against Southern. This close victory further proved that Bulldogs regular season was not as challenging. Although they are a number one seed the Bulldogs have rarely been tested against great competition. There scheduled strength ranked 97th in the country.

Two 12 seeds also advanced yesterday as Oregon dominated Oklahoma St. and California managed to slip past UNLV. Oregon, who could arguably be the most underrated team in the tournament, proved why they belong in big dance winning 68-55. California also toppled UNLV yesterday in a close game but managed to make key free throws to hold on 64-61.

The upset of the day went to Harvard as they defeated number #3 ranked New Mexico for their first NCAA tournament win  in school history. Harvard was a #14 seed in the tournament but came out attacking from the tip. They executed very well and got great shots shooting over 50% from the field. New Mexico was struggling on defense leaving Harvard open on pick and rolls and giving up open 3 pointers. Harvard is an Ivy League school who has no athletic scholarships on the team but made a statement to New Mexico.

Today is the 2nd day of the second round and there are some really intense match-ups. A game to watch would be the #8 ranked UNC Tar Heels against #9 Villanova. After tonight the first round will be over and many brackets will already be busted. It’s already been some upsets in this tournament and it can only get better from here. This is what March Madness is all about so get ready because the road to victory continues at noon. Anything can happen so be prepared to expect the unexpected!
