John Kilgo, Voice Of The Davidson Wildcats: “Davidson’s Goal Is To Be The Gonzaga Of This Part Of The Country”
Bustin’ Loose: Tuesday 3-19-13 John Kilgo stopped by to talk to the guys about the Davidson Wildcats’ first-round match up with Marquette, the rest of NCAA Tourney field and how, aside from the top few seeds, there are a lot of teams who can win it all this year.
We opened the conversation with John’s thoughts on the Wildcats’ chances against their Big East opponent, Marquette.
“This is anybody’s game. There’s no question about it. I know a lot of Davidson people were complaining they didn’t get a 13 or a 12 seed, but I think this is a great draw for Davidson… I think this a team Davidson can beat.”
Davante Gardner is a great player for Marquette and poses problems for a lot of teams, but who are some other players that could be troublesome for Bob McKillop and the Wildcats?
“If Davidson follows suit, when [Gardner] touches the ball inside, they will double team him; like they did [Mason] Plumlee. They made life miserable for Plumlee, and then [Ryan] Kelly killed them from the outside. I don’t think Marquette has an outside shooter that can do to them what Kelly did to them. So I think Davidson’s biggest concern is teams beating Davidson with dribble penetration.”
He also spoke to the key to Davidson being successful in this game and potentially moving in the NCAA Tournament.
“You have to keep them out of the middle, or they will go the foul line and they’ll beat you up. You look at the stats, and I know they played in two completely different conferences, but Davidson had a better FG percentage, they scored more points per game, they held their opponents to fewer points per game, and they shot better from the free throw line. They were playing against Southern Conference teams, but I still think this is a game Davidson has a real good chance to win, and if they do, they have the winner of Bucknell and Butler and that’s certainly a game that they can win. So I think they have to pretty happy with the draw.”
We see a lot of mid-major programs who have climbed up the rankings and earned a lot of respect around the country, i.e. Gonzaga, VCU and Butler. Where does Davidson fit in with these programs?
“Davidson’s goal is to be the Gonzaga of this part of the country… and I think they’re getting close. Davidson played them earlier this season, and with seven minutes to go, it was anybody’s game.”
The Davidson Wildcats will play the Marquette Golden Eagles on Thursday at 3:10pm, EST.
