RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s getting a look at how the state’s unemployment rate was shaping up at the start of this year.

On Monday, the state Commerce Department will releases figure showing which direction job prospects were heading in January.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate was 9.2 percent in December, compared with 9.1 percent in November and 10.4 percent in December 2011.

More than 17,000 people were added in December to the pool of people looking for work statewide.

The unemployment picture is improving on the national level. The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a four-year low of 7.7 percent in February from 7.9 percent the previous month.
