The Last Word 3-6-13 - Colin Hoggard from the Mac Attack joins Lewis to talk about the Panthers off season. They discuss the Dave Gettleman hire, draft needs, Jordan Gross and Ron Rivera. It’s an important time for Panthers. Find out what steps Lewis and Colin think Dave Gettleman should make to bring playoff football back to Carolina.
Gettleman expressed his desire to build the Panthers “from the inside out” at his introductory press conference. Colin agrees and thinks the Panthers should upgrade their offensive line.
“The right side of the of the offensive line and even left tackle are big areas that [Gettleman]‘s going to want to address because you have to protect Cam Newton. Everything revolves around him. He is the sun.”
Many believe Jordan Gross’ level of play slipped last year and lots of Panthers’ fans are suggesting Gross should move from left tackle to right tackle. To Colin, the Panthers should either keep Gross on the left side or cut him.
“I’m not in favor of moving him over to right tackle. He’s 35 pounds lighter than the average right tackle in the NFL, which is predominantly a run-based tackle.”
Lewis questions Ron Rivera’s ability to motivate players and cites their slow starts in back to back seasons. He attributes their strong finish in back to back years to “pink slip motivation.” Colin preaches patience with Rivera notes that a second year head coach comes with growing pains.
“There’s been issues with time management at the end of halves, being conservative when perhaps he should have been aggressive, but it is a learning process and we don’t ever want to hear that in sports anymore.”
Lewis and Colin agree that Rivera was more willing to take risks after the team was eliminated from the playoffs. In fact, most of his wins have come when the Panthers weren’t playing meaningful football. They coin the term “garbage time wins” and stress that Rivera must win meaningful football games to stick around in Carolina.
