Mac Attack 03/06/13: 15 year NFL linebacker and two time Pro Bowler Takeo Spikes joined the guys to discuss his gig as draft analyst for FSN, Cam Newton, gays in the locker room, Manti, and much more. Its a must listen
Cam Newton is a huge part of the future of the Carolina Panthers and Takeo gave us his thoughts on the young Quarterback.
“The most impressive thing that I saw was that he went back and studied himself… He improved every week. Once Week 8, Week 9 hit, he took his game to another level. That’s when the Carolina Panthers started winning a lot of games and they came up with some big wins.”
There are a lot of other good, mobile, young QBs in the league, so where does Cam stack up in comparison to those guys?
“To me, I don’t think it’s fair to say ‘is he RG III or is he Andrew Luck?’ You gotta compare those guys to him, because he came [into the league] and did it first… I look for a lot of great things for Cam in the years to come.”
As a guy who went through the NFL Combine and has been a first-hand witness to the evolution of this entire process, Takeo gave us his thoughts on how things, like the 40 yard dash times, get completely blown out of proportion now days.
“I think, when you look at the draft overall, especially this year in the first round, I think you’ll see a lot of guys get drafted not only off their 40 time, but just on [the thought that] this guy has potential, and potential means he ran a fast 40, he can jump this far, he can do this, he can do that… But, to me, I think where you’ll really see the productivity coming in this year’s draft is going to be the second round through the last round… It’s so deep with great, quality players… and those are the guys that will [have] those 8 to 10 year careers.”
It’s been a hot button issue surrounding the NFL combine, and so we asked Takeo what kind of effect a guy player might have on an NFL locker room.
“I don’t know everybody’s opinion, but I can speak for myself. I [do] know some guys would feel funny about it and I know some personally who would say ‘you know what, if that’s what he do, then that’s hat he does’… On a personal level, we, as the African American race, came through so much in just slavery itself, and being looked at and frowned upon. It would be wrong of me to judge somebody else… At the end of the day, I don’t care what you are. I don’t care what you do. As long as we both respect the game. If you can come in and help us win football games, you can be gay, not gay, black, white, hispanic; as long as we’re there for the same goal, I really don’t even care.”
Lastly, we had a little fun with the whole Manti Te’o story and he gave us a little insight into the locker room of whichever team ends up drafting him.
“He will find out the interviews that were conducted by the GMs at the combine were a piece of cake, because the guys are going to lay it on him!”
Don’t forget to catch Takeo Spikes for the next five Monday nights at 10pm on Fox Sports South as he will breaking down prospects in preparation for the upcoming 2013 NFL Draft.
