RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — An effort by Republican senators to clean out several key regulatory commissions to help them make selections more to their liking is being heard in the North Carolina House.
The House Commerce Committee scheduled debate Wednesday about a bill that also would eliminate 12 special Superior Court judgeships this summer.
Following party lines, senators passed earlier this month the bill that would essentially fire all current members of the state Utilities Commission, Coastal Resources Commission and Wildlife Resources Commission and other panels.
Republicans who wrote the bill say it will let Gov. Pat McCrory pick commissioners who share his administration’s philosophy, but Democrats say it’s a power grab.
McCrory’s office said he didn’t seek the bill.
