The Drive Wednesday 2-27-13 -The legendary broadcaster talks with The Drive as the regular starts to wind down. They go all over the ACC with talk of UNC getting their stride as the ACC Tournament gets near, what moment in his career sticks out to him the most, and is the one year out of high school rule for college basketball benefits anyone other that the NBA.
We start out by getting right to the ACC race and we get his thoughts on how crazy the ACC has been especially in the state of North Carolina.
“NC State has been up and down all year. I still think come tournament time they’re gonna be a dangerous team”
“With North Carolina they went to the small guard line up and they’ve been explosive putting points on the board and really turned the corner. Look for them to finish strong”
Then we go down memory lane with Dickie V to ask him what moment in his career sticks out to him the most.
“I look back to 1983 I was thinking about getting back into college coaching again and my boss at the time said to me ‘Dick you connect. Stay in broadcasting your going to make a hell of a living’ and in 1983 I went to my first assignment for ESPN at the Final Four and I couldn’t believe all the people coming up for autographs and pictures…and I realized then that maybe I had a chance in this career”
Then we talk about the one and done movement that so many college players seem to do.
“I think a kid like Anthony Davis a player of that stature that really wants the NBA and they want him, we shouldn’t force them to go to college for one year.”
“I would like to adopt the Major League Baseball rule…that when a player steps on a campus he has to stay for 3 years.”
