Local Teams Shine,Tuesday Hoops Recap, And A Hero Returns
For as lame as Monday was in sports,Tuesday more than made up for that. The Indiana-Michgan State game was everything College Basketball is supposed to be. Passion, intensity, and a wonderfully played game. Outside of Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson having a bromance, it was a great night all around for hoops fan. Especially those who root for teams in our area.
Local Teams Shine:
NC State 84 FSU 66: State fans should be thrilled that the Pack finally drilled a team. It seems like it has been a long time since they had one of these types of games. One of the reasons experts had State ranked so high to start the season was because the impact that Purvis and Warren would have. Warren went for a career 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. If they get even half of that production from Warren in March than a deep run is not out of the question
UNC 70 GT 58 I thought my TV settings were off last night but I guess the Yellow Jackets really do play in a gym that is that dark. Good win for the Heels as they setup their showdown with State on Saturday. Good sign for the Heels that they only got 19 combined from Hairston and Bullock but still won by 12. Leslie McDonald’s 15 off the bench were a huge part of that.
Bobcats 105 Magic 92: Great start for the Bobcats post All Star Break despite nearly blowing a 20 point halftime lead. Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson both had 24 points. Byron Mullens continued to impress with 20 points and 12 rebounds. It will be interesting to see what the Bobcats roster looks like after the deadline Thursday. Could tonight against the Pistons be the last we see of Henderson as a Bobcat?
Other ACC games of note
Miami 54 VA 50 Hurricanes win again with an incredible finish on a Reggie Johnson layup with 5.7 seconds left. Canes now 13-0 in the ACC. Can they run the table in the ACC? Watch out for the game against Wake. Deacs are a different team at home.
BC 69 MD 58 Your typical post Duke/UNC victory let down by Maryland. BC is going to be very very tough to beat next season
NBA Hoops Recap
Here is a quick summary of all the other NBA action last night. Not a great night in the league but we did have a buzzer beater.
Raptors 96 Wizards 88: Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan combined for 48 points. Raptors becoming an entertaining team to watch on NBA League Pass.
Nets 113 Bucks 111: Joe Johnson hits the shot to send the game to OT and the game winner in OT. Best part of this game? The Nets PR staff tweeted after the game that the Nets are 32-0 this season when they outscore their opponent.
Grizzlies 115 Pistons 91: Mike Conley led the way for Memphis with 19 points.
Bulls 96 Hornets 87: The front line of Boozer, Deng, and Noah combined for 52 points 32 rebounds
Nuggets 97 Celtics 90: Gallinari and Lawson both scored 26. Kenneth Faried added 16 rebounds. Big win for Denver as they lost 3 straight prior to the break
Jazz 115 Warriors 101: Warriors have now lost 6 in a row and you have to think they will be active at the deadline
Spurs 108 Kings 102: Spurs pick up where they left off. Tony Parker had 30 points and 11 dimes.
Suns 102 Blazers 98: Despite Hickson getting 25 and 16, Lillard dropping 24, and Aldridge’s 23 the Blazers lose. Kendall Marshall did play 9 minutes for the Suns.
A Hero Returns: A quick note before we wrap this up. I wanted to be serious for a second so please envision me using more of a Dick Schapp at the end of Sports Reporters voice more so than that of a Jerry Springer final thought. It seems like every time we turn around someone we trusted has let us down. Just this year already we had to deal with the Manti Te’o saga, Lance Armstrong, Oscar Pistorius, and another PED scandal in Miami involving A-Rod and possibly Ryan Braun. Its not just athletes, check TMZ any moment during the day or just turn on the local news and you will be let down by someone unexpected. Someone we can 100 percent trust and support without worry is Robin Roberts.Roberts is set to return to Good Morning America this morning after going through a successful bone marrow transplant in September. This is the second time she had a near death experience with the dreaded disease and never stops fighting. It doesn’t matter if your a man, a woman, young, or old we can all learn something from the poise, determination, and fight she showed on a daily basis. When you get mad today, just think about everything this woman has gone through just to be able to wake up the next day.
