The Drive Monday 2-18-13 – Larry McReynolds from NASCAR on Fox talks with The Drive about the anniversary of the Dale Earnhardts Sr’s death, Danica Patrick winning the pole in Daytona, and if she can finally win a race in the Sprint Cup Series.
Larry MacReynolds gets us ready for the start of the season by talking with Taylor and Marc about his experiences with the great Dale Earnhardt Sr.
“Its hard to believe 12 years ago we felt like we were getting ready for one of the biggest days in the history of the 500. It was our very first NASCAR on Fox broadcast and I still remember like yesterday in our pre-race interviews Dale was already in his fire suit and he said ‘you are going to see something on NASCAR on Fox that you’ve never seen before’ we felt like up until a quarter mile from the checkered flag that’s what we were in store for”
They also discuss Danica Patrick winning the pole in Daytona and what that will do for her career and for the sport of NASCAR.
“I think she little by little is starting to show that she is serious about this NASCAR venture and we know qualifying is a lot about the machine and horsepower…we know that getting out there with 42 other cars that’s going to be a totally different animal than that one car qualifying run. But I think with the amount of starts she has here you link that with a very fast car that she truly can be a contender”.
Lastly Marc asks Larry if Danica is just a novelty in NASCAR much like Anna Kournikova was in tennis.
“I don’t know if I would call her a novelty…maybe people did in the beginning but I like the girls attitude. She’s a realist, she realizes this mountain is as vertical as any mountain you’re going to try and climb.”
